Sal — Cabo Verde
SalCaboVerde.com is an independent, long-term digital project dedicated to documenting and interpreting life on Sal, one of the Cabo Verdean islands. I created it in response to a gap my Cape Verdean friends kept pointing out: the lack of a reliable, non-commercial online resource about the island. Much of the information about Sal available online is shaped mainly by aggressive tourism marketing, fragmented blog content, or superficial travel summaries. My friends were generously sharing their knowledge with me, and I wanted to give something back. This platform was that. It offers an alternative to commercial portals: thoughtful, clean, source-respecting, and loyal to the local context.
The project began in 2021 as a personal initiative and continues as an ongoing editorial commitment. It is both a structured knowledge platform and a gesture of respect toward Cape Verdean culture.

The mission
The platform covers cultural history, geography, biology, folklore, local traditions, and the lived experience of residents. Articles range from Cape Verdean music genres like funaná and coladeira to profiles of figures like Cesária Évora, from endemic wildlife and natural wonders to retold folk tales in both English and Kriolu. The site also serves as a practical resource — guides on where to stay, what to expect, how to play ouril. It includes a list of books and music, free downloadable materials, and accessibility tools with support for over 30 languages. It does not accept promotional partnerships or advertising. Editorial decisions prioritise accuracy and source transparency, contextual depth over quick recommendations, and long-form clarity over SEO-friendly content volume. Each piece is written to be accessible for visitors while remaining meaningful for the people who actually live on the island.
The platform functions as a living digital archive — it grows in response to ongoing research, materials received, conversations with residents, and direct observations.
